Penguins' Head Coach Mike Sullivan Not Going Anywhere

No matter what, the Pittsburgh Penguins will enter the 2023-24 season with Mike Sullivan as head coach.

The Pittsburgh Penguins officially have the 14th overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, but should they be looking to trade it with under two months until the draft?

It feels like this has been said numerous times since the end of the Pittsburgh Penguins season, but it bares repeating, Mike Sullivan isn’t going anywhere.

No matter how much New York Rangers fans beg and plead, Sullivan will remain as Penguins head coach for the foreseeable future.

Even if Kyle Dubas joins the front office, Sullivan will stay put; and there are a few, very obvious, reasons why.

First would be that Sullivan has a contract extension that doesn’t even start until the 2024-25 season; for reference, we’re about to enter the 2023-24 season.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG) locked Sullivan up earlier than usual and made it clear that he is their guy.

Larry Brooks of the New York Post suggested that if Dubas comes to Pittsburgh he would bring Sheldon Keefe with him, thus putting Sullivan in the unemployment line.

What Brooks didn’t mention is that Sullivan is helping with the hiring process for the new general manager.

The extent that he is helping isn’t exactly known, but no incoming GM would think Sullivan is unfit for the job.

If a GM candidate doesn’t believe Sullivan is worthy of a head coaching position in Pittsburgh, FSG just straight up won’t hire them.

Should Sullivan’s seat be getting warm? Sure, 2022-23 wasn’t his best year behind the bench, but he wasn’t getting much help from his general manager or his players.

Sullivan is one of the best coaches in the league; it’s fair for fans of other teams to fantasize about getting the best possible option, but it just won’t happen.
