The Pittsburgh Penguins are regaining their footing after knocking off the St. Louis Blues and dismantling the Tampa Bay Lightning. They now turn their attention to the Nashville Predators, looking for a third straight win. Here's what to watch for as the Pens take on the Preds.
1. Evgeni Malkin and Co. vs. Nashville Defense
The Penguins are riding on the back of Evgeni Malkin as they return to the win column. Malkin is on fire with four goals and eight points in his last five games. His linemates, Jason Zucker and Bryan Rust, are playing perfect complimentary hockey on the wings, as well. This Nashville defense will have their hands full containing the Penguins suddenly explosive offense. The Predators are a top-15 defensive team in the league, giving up less than three goals per game. The Penguins will need another stand-out effort from the Russian Bear if they want to overcome a stout Predators' defense.
2. Jeff Petry Finding Form
After missing nearly six weeks with an upper-body injury, Jeff Petry has been dynamite since his return to the lineup. He's been even more impressive over the last five game, pitching in offensively with five assists.
While the offense is certainly a plus, It's his well rounded game that's really benefitting the team. He and his defensive partner, Marcus Pettersson, are becoming a formidable second pairing. Playing over 20 minutes per game, the Penguins are relying heavily on Petry to keep this level of play going.
3. Teddy Blueger Finally Scores
The Penguins have struggled to get any production from their bottom six forwards, and that was best displayed by the snake-bitten Teddy Blueger. Goalless since December 6th, Blueger finally scored during the onslaught against the Lightning. The Pens are hopeful this ignites the forward, who has far more talent than his two goals this season suggest. Watch for Blueger and the fourth line to get involved early against the Predators.
The Penguins and Predators face-off at 8:00 p.m. at Bridgestone Arena.
