A pair of the Pittsburgh Penguins top prospects didn't make much noise in their opening game of the tournament.

It’s been well documented that the Pittsburgh Penguins don’t have one of the strongest prospect pipelines in the NHL, usually ranking near the bottom.

Regardless of their ranking, the Penguins have a handful of prospects that they are proud of and expect great things from in the very near future.

Two of the organization’s last three first round picks will be centerpieces at the annual Prospect Challenge, but the first game came and went without much impact from them.

Sam Poulin and Brayden Yager were lined up as the Penguins first two centers against the Boston Bruins, and it was a quiet contest between the two.

Yager finished with a secondary assist on the Penguins opening goal, but that was the only time either top prospect found the score sheet.

Poulin at one point ended a power play opportunity with a penalty of his own just seconds into the man advantage.

The duo will have a couple more chances at the challenge to gain momentum, but every second will count.

For Poulin specifically, this training camp and upcoming preseason will be huge in taking the right steps to get back into the NHL on a regular basis.

After making his NHL debut during the 2022-23 season, Poulin stepped away from the team to focus on his mental health.

He returned late in the season and has been more committed than ever to grow as a player.

If Poulin can impress and even exceed expectations in the final two games of the Prospect Challenge, he can give himself an upper-hand heading into the Penguins’ preseason.
