The Pittsburgh Penguins might be looking into tryout offers, and Zach Aston-Reese fits the bill.
Training camps are quickly approaching, and the numerous free agents still available are running out of time to find a new team; should the Pittsburgh Penguins call up an old friend?
Sure, much of the Penguins’ lineup might be set, but Zach Aston-Reese could add some real competition to the depth battles.
Professional tryout offers (PTO) have started to be handed out to guys looking for new opportunities across the league, and Aston-Reese could a perfect option.
Training camp in Pittsburgh is going to be full of fights for roster spots, especially within the bottom-six forward group, and adding a solid shutdown forward to the mix would make things interesting.
Throwing Aston-Reese into that group not only makes the competition tougher, but he would have a legitimate chance to steal a spot in the lineup.
Compared to some of the other names in the Penguins’ bottom six, Aston-Reese is a few years younger and already has familiarity with many areas of the team.
Aston-Reese has played in Mike Sullivan’s system before, and performed really well in his role on the fourth line.
The Penguins are now headed by Kyle Dubas in the front office, and Aston-Reese played under Dubas with the Toronto Maple Leafs last season.
Aston-Reese may not bring much offense to the situation, and the bottom six could use some scoring touch, but that just isn’t part of his game.
Although, he did score a career-high 10 goals with the Maple Leafs, so maybe there’s something sprouting there.
Even if Aston-Reese gets out-performed by someone in those camp battles, it’s no big deal.
Dubas can cut bait and move on with the better player, no harm no foul.
The Penguins may have their eyes on bigger fish in the sea when it comes to singing a PTO, Tomas Tatar might still be on their radar.
If Tatar is no longer an option, however, why not take a stab at a PTO for someone who has been here before and can add in a number of different ways?
