The Pittsburgh Penguins have liked what they've seen from Erik Karlsson, but they know there's still more to offer.

In Kyle Dubas’ first offseason with the Pittsburgh Penguins, he took a big swing and made arguably the biggest trade of the summer.

The Penguins acquired reigning Norris Trophy winning defenseman Erik Karlsson in what became the biggest trade in franchise history based on amount of assets moved.

Coming off of a 101-point season, the expectations were high for Karlsson in his first year in Pittsburgh, and so far, it’s been pretty middle of the road.

In 31 games played, Karlsson is leading Penguins defenders in points with 22, but he hasn’t quite exploded and reached his full potential.

While Karlsson has been a quality piece and can exceed expectations on the defensive side of the game, the Dubas and the Penguins believe there is still more to be found.

“I don’t even think we’re beginning to scratch the surface of Erik and what he can bring,” Dubas said on the GM Show with Josh Getzoff. “He’s going to help the group find another level. It’s not always easy when you’re coming into a new group.”

The Penguins have seen slow starts from most of their fresh faces that Dubas brought in this past offseason and Karlsson seems to be among them, but with so much more upside.

Dubas believes Karlsson will continue to grow into his role and help every single one of the players around him.

“Just over a quarter of the way into this first season of what’s going to be many here for Erik,” Dubas said. “As we go on through the year… he’s just going to continue to help the group.”

Karlsson has been great to start, but Dubas and the Penguins firmly believe there is more that can be unlocked from one of the best offensive defenseman the game has ever seen.
