The Pittsburgh Penguins have gotten great work from their goalies, but not much from their scoring.

Heading into the 2023-24 season, one of the biggest questions surrounding the Pittsburgh Penguins was their goaltending and if their duo could make enough saves to help breed success.

Through 26 games of the season, the Penguins are well out of a playoff spot, but it doesn’t have much to do with the work of Tristan Jarry and Alex Nedeljkovic.

Even Magnus Hellberg has respectable numbers in his three appearances as the third string goalie.

After a slow start between the pipes, the Penguins have gotten tremendous work from their netminders, yet are wasting great performances.

When Jarry was re-signed by the Penguins for five years and over $5 million, everyone agreed it was a risk; he’s prone to injuries and not being the toughest mental goalie around.

Despite the risk, Jarry has delivered with a .918 save percentage (SV%) and 2.48 goals against average (GAA).

Tack on an 8-10-2 record and things don’t seem that great, but you have to figure he started the season on a much rockier path.

He also still leads the league in shutouts with three and puts up quality games even in losses.

Nedljkovic was brought to Pittsburgh as a semi-project; he kicked off his career looking like one of the most promising young goalies in the NHL, but has been brutal the last couple of seasons.

Now, certainly as a backup, Nedeljkovic is looking to get his career back on track and reach that potential he had with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Even fighting through an injury, Nedeljkovic has been solid in his role; 2-2-0 record with a shutout, .937 SV%, and 2.18 GAA.

The Penguins netminders are doing their job keeping the puck in front of them, but the skaters continue to struggle to find ways to score and get them help.

Both Jarry and Nedeljkoivc (at the AHL level) have even scored a goal more recently than the power play.

With a 31st rank power play in the NHL and three straight games with only one goal scored, the Penguins need to find ways to build offense; their goaltending hasn’t been the issue.
