    The Pittsburgh Penguins just wrapped up their 57th season, missing the Stanley Cup playoffs for the third consecutive season. Despite their recent lack of success, the franchise has appeared in the playoffs 37 times and won five championships.

    Our newest series will reflect on how the Penguins performed on specific days leading up to the 2025 Stanley Cup Final.

    Notable Penguins Performances On This Day

    May 4, 1993: Tom Barrasso makes 26 saves to shut out the Islanders 3-0 in Game 2. It is his fourth career playoff shutout. Interestingly, it's the second-lowest save total for a playoff shutout in his Hall of Fame career.

    May 4, 1999: Martin Straka scores a goal and adds two assists for three points in a 4-2 win over the Devils. It is his second career three-point playoff game. 

    May 4, 2000: In the longest game in Penguins history, Ron Tugnutt makes a franchise record 70 saves in a 2-1 fifth overtime loss. Keith Primeau scored at 12:01 of the eighth period, allowing the Flyers to even the series at 2-2. 

    May 4, 2008: Marian Hossa has two goals, including the overtime winner to give the Penguins a 3-2 win over the Rangers, eliminating them from the playoffs. At the time, it was Hossa's first playoff overtime goal.

    May 4, 2009: In one of the most exciting playoff games in franchise history, Sidney Crosby collects his first playoff hat trick, matching the three-goal performance from rival Alex Ovechkin. Despite the two future Hall of Famers scoring six of the game's seven goals, David Steckel had the deciding goal in a 4-3 loss. 

    May 4, 2010: Marc-Andre Fleury records his fourth career playoff shutout, making 18 saves to blank the Canadiens 2-0 in Game 3. Moreover, it would be the only postseason shutout he'd record in his home province during his career.

    May 4, 2014: Kris Letang scores the game winner in the first period en route to his third career three-point playoff game as the Penguins shut out the Rangers 3-0. Fleury earns his seventh career playoff shutout by making 22 saves.

    May 4, 2016: Two-time Stanley Cup champion Patric Hörnqvist scores his only playoff overtime goal at 2:34 of the first overtime to give the Penguins a 3-2 win over the Capitals. Meanwhile, Brian Dumoulin picks up two assists for his first multi-point playoff game.
