The Penguins look to get back in the win column as they take on the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Pittsburgh Penguins suffered their first loss in five games against the Florida Panthers. After a few days off, the Penguins are back home and ready for a matchup against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Here’s what to watch for tonight.
1. Dmitry Kulikov to Make Penguins Debut
Mikael Granlund and Nick Bonino have both joined the Penguins’ lineup since the trade deadline. The other addition at the deadline, defenseman Dimitri Kulikov, is set to enter the Penguins lineup against the Blue Jackets.
With the arrival of Kulikov, which defenseman will lose their spot? In his first practice with the team, Kulikov skated in place of P.O. Joseph. Whether that is head coach Mike Sullivan’s plan or it was an effort to get Kulikov acquainted with the system, is still unclear.
The Penguins now have eight defensemen on their NHL roster, so it could be a bit of a revolving door until Sullivan finds the pairs he likes best.
2. Get Mikael Granlund on the Board
Granlund was the Penguins’ big trade deadline acquisition and will be playing in his third game with the team. Though he’s pointless in two games, Granlund has been solid as he adjusts to the Penguins’ style of play. He’s shown off his speed and his ability to carry the puck, two things that have already benefitted the third line.
The Penguins need to find a way to get Granlund on the board. As well as he’s played in two games, he’s here to help the bottom six score. This matchup against the Blue Jackets presents an excellent opportunity to do just that.
3. Patrik Laine’s Lasers
The Blue Jackets are one of the worst teams in the league this season, but that doesn’t mean they lack offensive firepower. Look no further than winger Patrik Laine. The Finnish forward has 19 goals and 42 points in 48 games played, and has been on a tear as of late. He’s put up three goals and seven points in his last five games. The Pens will need to shut down Laine in order to get a victory over the Jackets.
The Penguins and Blue Jackets face-off at 7:00 p.m. at PPG Paints Arena.
