Jansen Harkins is a late addition, but could be a real contender for the Pittsburgh Penguins lineup.
The Pittsburgh Penguins entered training camp prior to the 2023-24 season with plenty of options to build a much improved bottom six forward group.
From newcomers, to prospects, to guys that have been around the team for a few seasons, Mike Sullivan and the Penguins had all kinds of option.
One thing no one may have anticipated, however, is one more name entering the fold with a week until puck drop of the season.
It was announced that the Penguins claimed Jansen Harkins off of waivers form the Winnipeg Jets, and he wasn’t immediately pushed to the AHL.
In fact, it seems Harkins has a real chance of making the NHL roster as a depth option; considering the reps he took with the Penguins in practice and how Sullivan spoke about him, it’s a real possibility.
“I think that’s one of the reasons why Kyle [Dubas] brought him in,” Sullivan said. “He skates really well, he has good size. He could potentially help us in the puck pursuit game.”
While Sullivan like the defensive aspect Harkins can bring to the lineup, he also took note of the amount of offense he posted in the AHL last year.
Harkins recorded 50 points (25G-25A) during his time at the AHL level in 2022-23.
With the end of training camp right around the corner, Harkin is excited for his chance at what could be a spot in the NHL.
“In terms of a role, I think that’s kind of up in the air,” Harkins said. “Kind of has to be earned. Going to get a couple days of work in and see where I land.”
Harkins says he can play a full 200-foot game and bring speed and tenacity, both are pieces the Penguins lacked in last year.
He won’t set high expectations for himself right away, but Harkins is excited for his opportunity.
“I’ve been looking forward to a chance like this for quite a while now,” Harkins said. “I’m just excited to be here and to meet everybody and get underway.”
Sullivan acknowledges that there are still roster spots up for grabs in the Penguins lineup, and Harkins is a late entry, but a possible candidate.
