The Pittsburgh Penguins are hitting a nice stride just in time for the regular season.
Over the course of the first six preseason matches for the Pittsburgh Penguins, the team didn’t feel fully put together or overly potent.
The Penguins limped into their final exhibition game sporting a 2-3-1 record and their mostly NHL-level lineup was shutout just a few nights prior.
Not to mention their re-designed power play had struggled to find any momentum since the opening of training camp.
Not that there wasn’t excitement for the season to arrive, but the Penguins needed a boost of adrenaline before puck drop on opening night.
They sure got it in their final preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres; the Penguins picked up a 7-4 win and the power play came alive with a pair of goals.
The Penguins got some much needed momentum just in time for the final weekend before the 2023-24 season.
“I think it'll be a good boost for us,” Mike Sullivan said following the win. “For all intents and purposes, that was an NHL game.”
While the Penguins finished the preseason with a 3-3-1 record, the group feels like they’ve only gotten better with each passing game.
“I think we’ve improved as the preseasons gone on,” captain Sidney Crosby said. “I think as a group we’ve come a long way since the first day of camp.”
The chemistry is building and the Penguins feel like they’ve gotten to a good spot just in time for the season to start.
The power play may have found some footing by picking up a pair, but there is still room to grow.
“It’s a work in progress,” Sidney Crosby said. “It’s nice to get rewarded and we’ll just keep working at it.”
The next move for the Penguins will revolve around forming a roster for opening night; as for the guys on the ice, they’re hitting a good stride and are looking for a strong start to the season.
