The Pittsburgh Penguins finish their road trip with blowout loss.

The Pittsburgh Penguins finish their road trip with blowout loss.

From start to finish, the Pittsburgh Penguins were outplayed by the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night. Matthew Knies opened the scoring under two minutes into the game, and that was the closest the Penguins were the rest of the night.

The Maple Leafs ran a rough shot over the Penguins, chasing Tristan Jarry early in the second period after their fourth goal of the game. Alex Nedeljkovic stepped in and allowed three more goals on 21 shots.

This loss is one that the Penguins will need to throw out and forget as they shift their focus to the Minnesota Wild on Monday night.

    Three Stars

    3. Martin Jones

Jones made his third start of the year on Saturday night against the Penguins. While he wasn't tested much by the Penguins (eight high-danger chances against), Jones stopped all 38 shots he faced to shut out the Penguins, the 29th of his career.

    2. Max Domi

Domi set the tone early, collecting two assists in the opening period to put the Maple Leafs on top. He added a goal in the second period, finishing with his first three-point performance this season.

    1. Matthew Knies

The young Maple Leafs winger had a Gordie Howe hat trick, opening the scoring for the Leafs with a backhand shot that beat Tristan Jarry's glove side. Later that period, he got into a scuffle with Penguins defenseman John Ludvig following a physical hit in the corner.

Knies completed his night with a primary assist on Max Domi's second-period goal.

    Final Thoughts

While there isn't much to take from a game like this, the Penguins penalty kill continues to trend in the wrong direction. The Penguins allowed two goals on seven Maple Leafs power play attempts and have given up goals in three straight games.

That unit has been without pivotal pieces on the front end, including Noel Acciari, Matt Nieto, and Bryan Rust. As a result, the Penguins are ranked 28th in the NHL on the penalty kill in December, killing off only 70% of Penguins penalties.

The Penguins will look to respond with a better effort on Monday night as they welcome the Minnesota Wild to PPG Paints Arena.
