The Pittsburgh Penguins failed to capitalize on opportunities, falling 3-1 to the Buffalo Sabres.
Hockey is a fickle sport. You can dominate a game from beginning to end but come away with little to nothing to show. That was the fate of the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night.
For the second time this week, the Penguins had a goal called back in the first period. This time around, the Penguins suffered two disallowed goals. One overturned due to a missed offsides call, and another ruled goaltender interference on Jake Guentzel.
Goal Recap
(BUF 1-0) Alex Tuch (10): Connor Clifton (11) & Tage Thompson (13)
(TIE 1-1) Rickard Rakell (4): Erik Karlsson (21) & Evgeni Malkin (19) *PP
(BUF 2-1) Zemgus Girgensons (3): Eric Robinson (3) & Mattias Samuelsson (6)
(BUF 3-1) Rasmus Dahlin (12): Unassisted *EN
Three Stars
In the first period, Sidney Crosby picked up where he left off on Thursday night in Boston. He would have recorded a goal and an assist if not for the disallowed goals, including a picturesque pass to Drew O'Connor that would've been an early equalizer.
Crosby's line continues to lead the way for the Penguins, accounting for 24 of the team's 66 shot attempts in the game, and created 11 scoring chances while only conceding two.
Erik Karlsson has quietly found his scoring touch in recent weeks. He registered the primary assist on the lone Penguins goal of the night, extending his current point streak to three games (0G-4A) and passing Borje Salming for the second-most points scored by a Swedish defenseman in NHL history.
Karlsson still sits 354 points back of Detroit Red Wings legend Nicklas Lidstrom.
Luukkonen made more than his fair share of ten-bell saves against the Penguins. Luukkonen saved 44 of 45 shots and benefited from three shots off the post in the final period.
The Penguins return to action on Monday night as they travel east to take on their cross-state rival Philadelphia Flyers.
