The Pittsburgh Penguins have found the right partner for Evgeni Malkin.
The Pittsburgh Penguins are within striking distance from a playoff spot. Much of that is due to Sidney Crosby's stellar performance and Alex Nedeljkovic standing on his head most nights. But don't discount the impact of Evgeni Malkin's recent performance.
Malkin's three points (2G-1A) were pivotal in the Penguins comeback victory over the New Jersey Devils. He has stepped up in recent games and is starting to look like his old self.
A big reason for Malkin's resurgence is newcomer Michael Bunting. Bunting has nine points (3G-6A) in 14 games since joining the Penguins at the trade deadline.
However, Bunting has brought more than points to the table. His physical play in the net front and along the boards has created more offense for those around him, including Malkin.
The Penguins finishing issues of the last two seasons have been well-documented, but Bunting's style has had an immediate impact on that area.
With Bunting and Malkin on the ice together, the Penguins are converting 20% of their high-danger chances into goals according to natural stat trick. Without Bunting on his line, Malkin has only converted 7% of his high-danger chances this season.
Bunting's impact has been noticeable on the Penguins, and it's starting to pay dividends with one of their best players.
