Despite his injury issues, Tristan Jarry is still the Pittsburgh Penguins best option at goaltender moving forward.
Winning another Stanley Cup during the Sidney Crosby era remains the end goal for the Pittsburgh Penguins. To achieve that goal, the Penguins need a good starting goaltender. Is Tristan Jarry still that guy for this team?
Jarry is currently playing in the final year of his contract with the Penguins but has played just two games since suffering a lower-body injury on January 2nd.
When he has been in the lineup this season, Jarry has been stellar. He has a 16-5-5 record, a .921 save percentage, and a 2.65 goals-allowed average.
The biggest argument about re-signing Jarry, other than his recent struggles to stay healthy, is that he is unproven in the postseason. Having had only one opportunity to start for an entire series, the Penguins six game exit in 2021 to the Islanders, it is still unknown whether Jarry can backstop this team beyond the first round.
While that should be a concern, Jarry remains the best option for the Penguins moving forward. There is no one already in the Penguins organization that can challenge for that spot, and the chances of the Penguins acquiring a better option via a trade are slim.
This upcoming offseason's crop of free-agent goalies doesn't provide much to be desired either.
If Jarry is healthy, he is still one of the top goaltenders in the NHL. And despite the concerns about his health and his playoff performance, Jarry remains the Penguins best option in net for the foreseeable future.
