Initially labeled as a ‘freak accident,’ Johnson died after taking an opponent’s skate blade to the neck during a game in the Elite Ice Hockey League in the United Kingdom." } }, { "type": "paragraph", "data": { "text": "The news of Johnson’s passing shook the hockey world as players and leagues across the globe began using and mandating neck protection. Multiple players across the NHL have started to wear neck guards on a regular basis, including multiple Penguins skaters.
