The investigation into the death of former Pittsburgh Penguins forward Adam Johnson has been paused by coroner.

Sidney Crosby does not need to leave the Pittsburgh Penguins to "cement his legacy" by winning a Stanley Cup with a different organization.

PITTSBURGH – It’s been three months since the tragic death of former Pittsburgh Penguins forward Adam Johnson. Initially labeled as a ‘freak accident,’ Johnson died after taking an opponent’s skate blade to the neck during a game in the Elite Ice Hockey League in the United Kingdom.

The news of Johnson’s passing shook the hockey world as players and leagues across the globe began using and mandating neck protection. Multiple players across the NHL have started to wear neck guards on a regular basis, including multiple Penguins skaters. USA Hockey recently mandated the usage of neckguards for all players under the age of 18.

While the hockey world was shifting their safety protocol, an investigation opened into Johnson’s death. In the most recent update, it was announced that the coroner has suspended their investigation.

Senior coroner at the Sheffield Coroner’s Court, Tanyka Rawden, has put a pause on their investigation until July 26. The suspension can be lifted, however, if South Yorkshire Police conclude their investigation and do not charge a previously arrested man.

The police previously arrested a man, and he was questioned on manslaughter. He was later released on bail.

Johnson was playing with the Nottingham Panthers in a contest against the Sheffield Steelers.
