Luke Kunin has scored in three straight games, but the San Jose Sharks get more than just scoring from him.
Kunin has had to play both center and wing so far this season. With Mikael Granlund's and Logan Couture's injuries, Kunin was forced into some action at center.
With Nico Sturm taking a leave of absence for the next two games, the expectation is that he will move to the center again.
"I'm able to play all three [forward] positions," Kunin said. "I think that helps me [and] helps the group. I'm willing to do whatever we need as a group."
Kunin's ability to play different positions and have different linemates is a testament to his play style.
"I'm not trying to undervalue playing with someone for an extended period of time, but when you play the way [Kunin] does, when you skate, hit people, and then go to the net, what does that have to do with your linemates," Sharks head coach David Quinn said. "You get rewarded when you play in a straight line, simple approach."
Kunin feels the same way about playing with different linemates.
"It is a good thing to have as a player to be able to play anywhere in the lineup," Kunin said. "I think it helps the group when you have injuries or whatever might happen."
Kunin skated with Mike Hoffman and Kevin Labanc at practice today as the centerman.
Kunin is coming off a significant knee injury and could've played a part in the missed chances to score early in the season.
"I didn't play hockey for 11 months; that could have a little bit of it as well," Kunin explained. "Having looks and finishing are two different things. I just got to find myself keep going in those areas, get to the net and [get] loose and find ways to score."
Kunin was relied upon heavily in all kinds of situations before his injury. He has returned to the guy Quinn can look to when he needs versatility from his forwards.
