Former San Jose Sharks goaltender Aaron Dell will play for Team Canada at the 2023 Spengler Cup.
"Team Canada always has high expectations when it comes to hockey," Dell told THN via text. "I'm excited and honored to be able to wear that maple leaf on my chest and compete for my country."
The Spengler Cup is the oldest invitational hockey tournament. The tournament is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The tournament field consists of six teams. Canada, HC Dynamo Pardubice (Czechia), KalPa (Finland), Frolunda HC (Sweden), HC Ambri-Piotta and the hosts, HC Davos.
Dell will join forces with former NHLers, including Jordie Benn, Nathan Beaulieu, Ty Smith, Josh Jooris, and more.
Sharks Legend Joe Thornton is on the management staff for Team Canada and most likely advocated for Dell to be on the roster.
Dell recently signed a PTO with the Carolina Hurricanes as he continues to find a new home in the NHL. He was seen skating with Thornton and injured Sharks captain Logan Couture earlier this week.
Walt Ruff reports that the Hurricanes were aware of Dell's roster spot on Team Canada and see it as a positive.
Dell has played 111 games for the San Jose Sharks and has 48 wins. He has a .909 save % during his two stints with San Jose.
