The San Jose Sharks (9-23-3) host the Edmonton Oilers (15-15-1) for the second time this season. The entire hockey world remembers what happened the last time these teams met. Goaltender Magnus Chrona will get his first career NHL start.
On Nov. 9, the Sharks beat the Oilers 3-2 with the entire hockey world watching.
San Jose was outshot 41-18 but capitalized on their high-quality chances. This win was the Sharks second win of the season.
Tonight could be a different story. Edmonton has changed its coaching staff, and Connor McDavid looks healthy with 31 points in his last 15 games.
Sharks head coach David Quinn told THN that Magnus Chrona will make his first NHL start tonight.
"Stop pucks," Quin laughed about what he wants from Chrona. "Just be calm. I know it's going to be an exciting night for him and probably a little nerve-wracking all at once but turn the nerves and excitement and feed off it."
As for facing McDavid and Leon Draisaitl:
"He shouldn't be [thinking about them]. But he might be," Quinn smiled.
Ryan Carpenter was activated from IR today, and Givani Smith was placed on IR. Quinn did not confirm that Carpenter would return to the lineup.
The Edmonton Oilers come into San Jose desperate for points. They are currently six points out of a wild card spot. Justin Bailey says they must shut plays down early for the San Jose Sharks to win.
"I think for us, killing plays early is going to be huge tonight," Bailey said. "To echo what Coach said in the meeting, it's making sure our play with the puck is right tonight."
Sharks projected line combinations:
Eklund-Hertl-Zadina
Duclair-Granlund-Zetterlund
Hoffman-Carpenter-Kunin
Bailey-Studnicka-Labanc
Ferraro-Burroughs
Okhotiuk-Rutta
Thrun-Addison
Chrona
Kahkonen
Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. and can be seen on NBC Sports California or the Sharks Audio Network.
