Sharks Captain Reveals Serious Injury
San Jose Sharks captain Logan Couture revealed the injury that held him out of the lineup this season.
"I was dealing with osteitis pubis," Couture explained. "Some days were terrible. Some days, I couldn't get out of bed."
According to the Cleveland Clinic, osteitis pubis is "inflammation in the joint between your left and right pubic bones (your pubic symphysis). It causes pain and swelling in your groin or lower abdomen."
Couture had tried to return from this injury twice before this season but suffered setbacks.
The confusion and uncertainty behind the injury now make sense. The recovery for this injury is rest and, when able, strengthening.
"I've tried everything. We tried rest. Tried cortisone," Couture said. "Tried multiple things. At the end of the day, I think it's what I started to do with [my physical therapist] was a lot of strengthening in the area and rest."
Tonight will be Couture's first game since April 13, 2023, and he talked about what his roverery process was like. It wasn't easy on him physically and mentally.
"There were days where I didn't think I'd ever play again. I've said that. Once I started to look and see [my physical therapist] with the time off, I think it got me over the hump and I got back skating," Couture said. "There were times when I would skate here, feel good for two days, and then I'd have to stop because it would flare back up again. The flare-ups were the worst part. I couldn't get out of bed. I couldn't walk around my house. I couldn't do anything and spend time with my kids. So very, very tough, tough days, but I'm happy to be where I'm at right now."
Couture has taken part in every San Jose Sharks practice this week with no restrictions.
As for his excitement for tonight:
"I am very, very excited. It hasn't really set in yet, but I think once I start to drive to the rink today, I'm sure I'll be pretty nervous," Couture smiled. " I think it makes me play better when I'm a little bit nervous. It usually lasts until the first shift, and then it goes away."
He explained that it was a feeling of nervous excitement.

Sharks head coach David Quinn said he plans to watch Couture's minutes closely tonight but will use him in every situation he needs him.
"If I feel like I can go on the ice and help the team, I'll go out there," Couture said.
