Brian Fluharty-USA TODAY Sports - Sophia Kunin Scores in PWHL Minnesota Debut

The PWHL has had a successful beginning, and San Jose Sharks winger Luke Kunin has a strong connection to the league as his wife, Sophia, plays for Minnesota.

Sophia was the No. 60 overall pick by PWHL Minnesota. She played at the University of Wisconsin and won a national championship in 2019.

The PWHL inaugural season got underway on New Year's Day with a ton of support. PWHL Minnesota's first game wasn't until Jan 3. Facing PWHL Minnesota, Kunin and her squad captured the first win in team history with a 3-2 victory over PWHL Boston. Kunin scored the second goal.

Through three games this season, Kunin only has one goal and two penalty minutes. PWHL Minnesota is the only remaining undefeated team at 3-0.

The PWHL is the most prominent women's hockey league to date and has finally given female players the ability to get paid for playing the game they love.

"It's pretty exciting for us," Luke said about his wife being drafted during Sharks training camp. "She worked really hard to get to that point. For her to get drafted by her hometown team, that's pretty cool."

Luke played on the Minnesota Wild from 2017 to 2020. Luke and Sophia tied the knot last summer.

PWHL Minnesota's next game will be on Sunday against PWHL New York at the Excel Energy Center, the home of the NHL's Wild.
