The San Jose Sharks pushed hard in the third period but couldn't hold onto a 3-2 lead as they fell to the Florida Panthers 5-3 Tuesday night.
Ryan Lomberg, Sam Reinhart, Carter Verhaeeghe, Kevin Stenlund, Aleksander Barkov scored for the Panthers. Reinhart has been red-hot and has a five-game point streak, tallying 15 points. Anthony Stolarz continues to haunt the Sharks. He made 19 saves.
Mike Hoffman scored his first goal as a member of the Sharks. Jan Rutta earned an assist on that goal for his first point since joining Team Teal. Tomas Hertl and Luke Kunin also scored for San Jose, and Mackenzie Blackwood made 26 saves.
The Sharks scored twice in the third but gave up two goals in 1:03 to give the lead right back to the Panthers.
Danil Gushchin made his season debut and looked electric. At one point, he tried to go through the legs for a goal but missed the net high.
12:34: Lomberg lays out Eklund, then beats Blackwood over the blocker. 1-0 Panthers.
15:58: Hoffman puts the rebound past Stolarz for his first as a Shark. 1-1.
The Sharks started slow but started playing g better as the period went on. Labanc took a bad penalty, but the Sharks killed it off. Blackwood had to be ready early and was up to the task.
12:09: Reinhart taps home the rebound. 2-1 Panthers.
The Sharks weren't the sharpest in the second, but other than one penalty, they did well. Gushchin was strong and had a terrific period.
6:11: Hertl taps home a great pass from Fabian Zetterlund. 2-2.
7:21: Kunin slides home the goal off the backboard rebound. Gushchin earned an assist. 3-2 Sharks.
10:06: Verhaeghe scores to tie the game on the powerplay. 3-3.
11:09: Stenlund scores to give the Panthers the lead back. 4-3 Panthers.
17:47: Barkov puts home the empty net goal. 5-3 Panthers
