San Jose Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky hinted that Macklin Celebrini could eventually become a team captain.

In a story by Tom Gulitti of NHL.com, Warsofsky said he is ready to see where Celebrini can take the Sharks.

"He's so driven," Warsofsky told Gulitti at the 2024-25 South Carolina Stingrays Fan Fest at North Charleston Coliseum on Saturday. "I think at times we're going to have to reel him back just because he wants to go, go, go, but he's a super competitive, self-driven young person, which you don't see a lot this day and age. That's what impressed me the most."

His drive to be first in everything and challenge others has been echoed throughout the Sharks franchise. Director of Player Development Todd Marchant said a similar thing following the 2024 Prospect Scrimmage.

Warsofsky then hinted at the chance of Celebrini becoming a team captain in the not so far future.

"He's going to be a guy that won't wear a letter (this season), but he's going to drive our team just the way he carries himself at such a young age," Warsofsky said.

At 18, becoming the captain, let alone getting at least an 'A' on his sweater, is out of the question. That hasn't stopped the conversation of whether Macklin Celebrini should follow Logan Couture as the next captain of the San Jose Sharks.

Celebrini will be the engine that drives the Sharks bus this season, and Warsofsky knows it.

"I think just him driving the way we need to play and the system we want to play with, him being a leader in that," Warsofsky said. "I think him understanding how it's a man's game now and he has to protect himself at times. I watched a lot of him in college and he plays on the inside, he's not afraid of it, but now you're going against some bigger boys, and you've got to protect yourself so he can last."

Some of the NHL's best players were named captains of their teams at a young age. Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid were both named captains at 19.

In September, the San Jose Sharks will debut Celebrini in some unofficial game action at the 2024 Rookie Faceoff.
