While there have been four players in the history of the San Jose Sharks to wear the number 39, one stands above the rest by a considerable margin. Logan Couture, the Sharks' most recent captain, wore the number 39 for nearly a decade and a half before being forced to halt his playing career due to a lingering injury. The 37-year-old centerman is still under contract with the Sharks, but his deal is set to expire next summer. Couture originally joined the Sharks organization when they selected him with the seventh-overall pick in the 2007 NHL Draft. After a couple of more seasons in the Ontario Hockey League, he made his NHL debut during the 2009-10 season while splitting time between the Sharks and their American Hockey League affiliate, the Worcester Sharks. The following season, Couture established himself as a full-time NHLer by scoring 32 goals and 56 points in 79 games for the team in teal. For the next decade, he learned from captains like Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski before taking over the leadership reins himself, as he was named captain ahead of the 2019-20 season. He wore the 'C' on his uniform for the next five seasons, but during the 2023-24 season, he was limited to just six games and hasn't played since. Couture fell just short of the 1,000 game milestone, as he's only played 933 games throughout his time in the NHL. He finished his career with 701 regular season points (323 goals and 378 assists) and an additional 101 points in the postseason.
