Seattle erased a two-goal deficit and survived a penalty-filled brawl against the Flames, preserving their undefeated preseason streak through a high-stakes shootout at Climate Pledge Arena.
Facing off against the Calgary Flames for the second time in this preseason, the Kraken put up quite a fight, literally, to take a 4-3 shootout victory. A relatives tame first period led to a second period with multiple dust ups, culminating in a physical third period and eventual shootout victor. The team remains undefeated through preseason play.
The first period was slow to get started. Calgary opened the scoring ten minutes in and Bobby McMann answered just over five minutes later. As time went on, the period got increasingly physical, but no penalties were assessed. The period ended 1-1.
It was three minutes into the second period when Calgary's Brayden Pachal took a minor penalty for interference that the game began to shift into more of a brawl. Kaapo Kakko joined Pachal just forty seconds later with a roughing penalty after a scrum at center ice. The first big dust up of the night happened at 4:43. Every player on the ice-sans goalies-got involved and penalties were dealt like playing cards. For Seattle, Dunn, McMann, and Mahura all took seats in the penalty box: Dunn for roughing, McMann for fighting, and Mahura for roughing x2. They were joined bay Rory Kerins and Andreas England who were assessed a double minor for roughing and five for fighting, respectively.
That was not the end. Less than three minutes later, Seattle's Ville Ottavainen instigated another bout that saw him receive a game misconduct along with an instigator penalty and another five for fighting. Joining him in the locker room was Curtis Douglas and Calgary's Brennan Othmann who both also received misconduct penalties. Another two for charging was added to Othmann's crimes, as well.
The game somewhat settled after that, though it remained high physical. At the end of it all, Calgary managed to tally two more goals bringing the score at the end of the second period to 3-1.
In the third, the Kraken were able to make up the deficit with goals from Brandon Montour and Ryker Evans, both scored in the first eight minutes. Regulation ended 3-3 and the game moved into overtime. Neither team were able to find the back of the net and a shootout decided it. Zingers from Berkly Catton and Matty Beniers earned the Kraken the win.
The team will be traveling to Vancouver tomorrow for a 4pm puck drop against the Canucks for the final game of the preseason.
