Seattle, WA - Kraken GM Ron Francis announced on Wednesday the acquisition of forward Kaapo Kakko from the Rangers in exchange for Will Borgen and 2025 third- and sixth-round picks.

"Kaapo is a young dynamic forward who brings skill and offense to our club," said Francis. "We're excited to have him join us. I also want to thank Will for everything he's done for our franchise. As an original member of the Kraken, we wish him all the best in New York."

Will Borgen, an original Kraken selected in the 2021 Expansion Draft, played 233 regular-season games for Seattle, recording 55 points (9G/46A). In 2023-24, he set career highs in assists (22), points (25), blocked shots (111), and ice time (17:35 per game). Borgen ranks second in franchise history with 535 hits and has played 216 consecutive games, the 17th-longest active Iron Man streak in the NHL. He also appeared in all 14 playoff games in 2023, contributing 1G and 2A.

Will Borgen (middle) plays in his last Kraken game at Climate Pledge Arena on December 17th, 2024 against the Ottawa Senators.

Kaapo Kakko, selected 2nd overall by the Rangers in the 2019 NHL Draft, has tallied 131 points (61G/70A) in 330 career regular-season games. The 6'1", 215-pound forward debuted on Oct. 3, 2019, and had 10 goals and 23 points in his rookie season. Kakko set career highs in 2022-23 with 18 goals, 22 assists, 40 points, and a +12 rating. He ranks among the Rangers' top contributors, sharing 4th in even-strength goals. Kakko has also posted 9 points (4G/5A) in 44 playoff games.

The Turku, Finland native will represent his country at the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off in Montreal and Boston (Feb. 12-20). Initially, no Kraken players were selected, but Wednesday’s trade makes Kakko the sole Seattle representative in the tournament.

In nearly four seasons with the Seattle Kraken, Will Borgen has become a fan favorite and a beloved figure in the locker room. Known for his post-game selfies and playful antics with teammates, he’s always brought a contagious, positive energy to the team.

The NHL’s holiday trade freeze goes into effect at 11:59 p.m. local time on Thursday and lasts until 12:01 a.m. on Dec. 28.

Thanks, Will, for everything. We just hope you have fun in New York.
