The Seattle Kraken are now the only team in the NHL without a captain after Utah HC named Clayton Keller as their first-ever captain.
The Kraken chose Mark Giordano as their captain in their inaugural season, but he was dealt to the Toronto Maple Leafs at the trade deadline. Since then, the captaincy has been vacant.
Throughout the offseason, there have been hints at possibly naming a captain with fans of the organization attempting to predict who might be named. Some of the clear candidates are Jordan Eberle, Adam Larsson and Jared McCann for not only their leadership on and off the ice but also the commitment they've shown to the franchise. Among the dark horses are Matty Beniers and newly signed Brandon Montour. Montour has demonstrated excellent leadership qualities already and Beniers would a choice for the future of the franchise.
Five captains have been named this offseason; Radko Gudas (Anaheim Ducks), Rasmus Dahlin (Buffalo Sabres), Nick Foligno (Chicago Blackhawks), Clayton Keller (Utah HC) and Victor Hedman (Tampa Bay Lightning). Auston Matthews was also named captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs after John Tavares passed the honour onto him.
It's still unknown if the Kraken will name a captain before the beginning of the season with just four more days before puck drop, a decision and announcement would have to be made soon.
