Day One Of NHL Signings (As of July 1, 5 pm PT - Will Be Updated)

Above photo: Morgan Geekie (67), one of the 2022-23 Seattle Kraken who have signed elsewhere on the first day of NHL free agency.

Editor's Note: We discuss the Kraken free-agent signing of Pittsburgh defenseman Brian Dumoulin in a separate Kraken Reaction video, along with more on the departing players.

Kraken Players On The Move

Ryan Donato, center

  • Signs with: Chicago Blackhawks
  • Terms: 2 years, $4 million
  • The Chicago Sun-Times says: "With Connor Bedard, Taylor Hall, Nick Foligno, Corey Perry and now Donato all joining the Hawks’ forward lineup and Lukas Reichel and Cole Guttman ready to play in the NHL full-time, the Hawks are up to 16 forwards on the roster. They won’t start the season with more than 13 or 14."

Carson Soucy, defense

  • Signs with: Vancouver Canucks
  • Terms: 3 years, $9.75 million
  • The Hockey News says: "Soucy is a solid third-pair defenseman, but a price tag north of $3 million is quite steep, especially for an organization that needs to sign Elias Petterson at top dollar next off-season if they want any chance of keeping their franchise center."

Daniel Sprong, right wing

  • Signs with: Detroit Red Wings
  • Terms: 1 year, $2 million
  • The Hockey News says: "This is a great low-risk, high-reward type signing for Detroit. Dating back to the start of the 2020-21 season, only Auston Matthews, Jakub Vrana, David Pastrnak, Max Pacioretty and Filip Forsberg have scored more 5-on-5 Goals per 60 minutes than Sprong has. Can he continue scoring at that rate while playing more minutes?"

Morgan Geekie, center

  • Signs with: Boston Bruins
  • Terms: 2 years, $4 million
  • The Hockey News says: "Seattle opted not to qualify Geekie, who recorded a career-high 28 points in 69 games last season. The 6-foot-3 forward recorded 1.01 primary assists during 5-on-5 play last year, in the 96th percentile among skaters that played at least 500 minutes, according to naturalstattrick.com."
