Adding New Meaning to "Getting Cut By The Team"

Something is terribly wrong in this picture.

Sure, it appears at first to be from a fun social media video, in which Seattle Kraken goaltender Philipp Grubauer unboxes his new equipment.

Look closer. He's using a box cutter!

Philipp Grubauer, barely a third of the way into a six year, $35.4 million contract, is slicing open these boxes himself. And, inviting the wrath of the Hockey Gods.

Seattle's number one netminder has a sharp blade inches away from a disaster. What if he were to be startled by an inadvertent goal horn mid-slice?

Memo to Philipp Grubauer: stay on the ice! Where, y'know, it's safe.Memo to Philipp Grubauer: stay on the ice! Where, y'know, it's safe.

The Kraken assuredly employ people trained in safely opening boxes. The team wouldn't let one of these box-opening specialists play goal, would they? Certainly not.

So why have a goaltender fiddle around with a box cutter? At the very least, have the box pre-opened.

What's next? Joey Daccord juggling flaming chainsaws? Jaden Schwartz alligator wrestling? Matty Beniers driving while texting? Buoy the mascot repelling from the ceiling of Climate Pledge Arena? (Okay, forget that last one.)

I thought the NHL was placing a greater emphasis on player safety. Guess not.
