The Seattle Kraken have been granted permission to speak with Toronto Maple Leafs associate coach Lane Lambert, according to Darren Dreger.

Almost the entirety of Lambert's NHL coaching experience comes as an assistant or associate coach, doing so with the Maple Leafs, New York Islanders, Washington Capitals and the Nashville Predators. 

The 60-year-old has served as head coach, but it went poorly. The Islanders made the playoffs in the 2022-23 season, losing in six games in the first round, but his second season saw him fired after just 45 games. 

Serving as an associate coach with the Maple Leafs, Lambert was in charge of their defensive game and their penalty kill. Defensively, the Leafs improved, ranking eighth in goals allowed per game but ranked 17th on the penalty kill. 

Lambert's coaching style is very comparable to his tasks as an assistant coach. He wants his teams to play a tight defensive game, focused on defending the front of their net. The wingers tend to hang lower in the defensive zone, protecting the slot and allowing weak point shots, which the wingers or the defensemen eagerly block. The centers have the largest role. They are tasked with following the opponent's forwards around the defensive zone, covering almost the entirety of it.

Offensively, the Islanders were lacking quite of bit of star talent, which made it difficult to completely grasp what his true offensive strategies and play styles would have been. 

The Kraken have now been linked with Lambert, Jeff Blashill, Don Granato, David Quinn, Mitch Love, and Marco Sturm.
