The Seattle Kraken parted ways with Dan Bylsma after just one season as the head coach, and while many thought Jessica Campbell may have followed, the organization is rewarding her with another season after some early positive returns.
The Kraken's offence was abysmal in the 2023-24 season, ranking 29th in goals scored. It improved in the 2024-25 season under Campbell's guidance, ranking 16th and clicking at 18.9% on the power play, although it steadily improved as the season went along.
Under Campbell's tutelage, the most important factor was that the young Kraken forwards took positive strides. Shane Wright was phenomenal in the AHL with the Coachella Valley Firebirds the year before, where Campbell was the assistant coach, and this year took a big step forward. Matty Beniers had a rebound season, Eeli Tolvanen set a career-high in goals, and Kaapo Kakko blossomed following the trade.
Newly promoted executive vice president and general manager Jason Botterill praised Campbell's work with the young players, explaining that it's why they elected to retain her. "We like what she’s done with our young players."
Campbell will likely have more young forwards to work with next season, as Jani Nyman is expected to be a full-time NHLer next year, and Berkly Catton could be competing for a roster spot in training camp. The Kraken also have the sixth-best odds of landing the No.1 pick in the draft, and if they move up, they could draft a player competing for a spot out of camp.
Although the Kraken are hoping to be competitive again next year, the team is emphasizing developing young players. The Kraken have a prospect pool filled with depth, but are still looking to find a player with superstar-level skill. If they can draft or develop a current player to that level, Campbell will have a big effect.
