Seattle locks down defensive depth and goaltending stability as the Firebirds standouts ink two-way extensions, positioning themselves for potential NHL call-ups throughout the 2026-27 campaign.
Extensions keep coming from the Kraken front office. This time for goaltender Viktor Östman and defenseman Ville Ottavainen. The pair were offered one-year, two-way contracts to remain part of the Kraken franchise for the 2026-27 season.
Ottavainen will be returning for his fourth AHL season. In 2025-26 he skated in 53 games for the Firebirds scoring 17 points (3g/14a) and racking up 71 penalty minutes. The 6’5” Finn also contributed a goal and 3 assists during the team’s playoff run. Ottavainen made his NHL debut during the 2024-25 season, posting an assist in his only appearance as a Kraken.
On the other hand, 2025-26 was Östman’s first full season in the AHL. He appeared in 36 games with a 17-15-3 record. The Swedish netminder posted a .906 save percentage and 2.1 goals against average for the season. With the injuries that plagued Kraken goaltenders, the 25-year-old also had the opportunity to start in his first NHL game on April 16th, 2026. Despite the Kraken losing 2-0, Östman stopped 33 of 35 shots and finished with a .943 save percentage.
Both Östman and Ottavainen are expected to remain in Coachella Valley, but there is the possibility that one or both could called up throughout coming season as the need arises.
