The hearts of many in the hockey community were broken when the lives of the brothers were tragically taken away in August by a careless driver while Johnny and Matthew were riding their bikes in Salem County, New Jersey. Johnny played 11 seasons in the NHL with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Calgary Flames, while Matthew played professionally for five seasons in the American Hockey League, ECHL, and Sweden. The brothers were known on and off the ice for their advocacy, community outreach, and kindness toward family, friends, and fellow hockey players.

Johnny graced the ice at Climate Pledge Arena with both the Flames and the Blue Jackets. Many fans in attendance wore Johnny's #13 Flames jersey in his memory. After a tribute video played above the ice, guests were asked to hold a moment of silence for 13 seconds.
