Seattle Kraken Unlikely To Offer UFA Bellemare New Deal

Seattle Kraken Unlikely To Offer UFA Bellemare New Deal

James Carey Lauder-USA TODAY Sports - Don't Underestimate The Value Of A Pierre-Edouard Bellemare

This sentence is a melancholy one to write, because it's likely the last time "Pierre-Edouard Bellemare" and "Seattle Kraken" will appear together without the word "former."

Not because the Kraken can't find a better on-ice player than the 39-year-old pending free agent. They can, and they need to, just as every roster spot needs to be evaluated every year.

But under the category "intangibles," whatever club employs Bellemare automatically earns a check mark.

The man nicknamed "Belly" is one of the most energetic, positive, friendly people - not just athletes, people - you'll ever meet.

That, plus a level head and tireless work ethic, has helped Bellemare navigate a pro career which began in his native France way back in 2003. Despite not reaching the NHL until age 29, he played his 700th league game in a Kraken sweater on April 18 in Minnesota.

In his sole season in Seattle, Bellemare led by example in so many ways. He taught faceoff technique in practice, fearlessly blocked shots in games, and whether a healthy scratch or out with a broken leg, never lost his youthful enthusiasm.

If, as expected, Seattle doesn't extend an offer to Bellemare, he's said he'll try to catch on with another club. Several teams would be lucky to have him, because he (1) relishes unglamorous jobs like penalty killing, (2) mentors youngsters, and (3) helps the dressing room survive the endless tedium of an 82-game season.

Shortly before his milestone 700th game, Bellemare spoke about his hockey philosophy. It's today's Kraken Reaction.

I dare you to listen to Pierre-Edouard speak and NOT be inspired.
