The Springfield Thunderbirds have acquired defenseman Wyatt Newpower from the Syracuse Crunch in exchange for forward Matthew Peca.

The St. Louis Blues AHL affiliate, the Springfield Thunderbirds, have completed an AHL trade, sending Matthew Peca to the Syracuse Crunch in exchange for Wyatt Newpower.

Newpower is a 28-year-old, 6-foot-4 right-handed defenseman. In 21 games with the Crunch this season, Newpower has notched two goals and five points. Prior to joining the Crunch, Newpower put up three assists in 23 games with the Iowa Wild, giving him a total of two goals and eight points in 44 games.

In his AHL career, Newpower has recorded 13 goals and 52 points across five teams. The Thunderbirds will be his sixth stop in his career.

Newpower will be a Group-6 UFA at the end of the season.

Heading to the Crunch is Peca, the now former Thunderbirds captain. Peca was the leader in points with 34 following the Matt Luff trade. This was Peca’s fifth season with the Blues organization.

The 32-year-old has accumulated 530 games of AHL experience, recording 124 goals and 391 points. He’s also played in 83 NHL games, posting six goals and 21 points.

Peca is returning to the AHL affiliate of the team that drafted him in 2011, the Tampa Bay Lightning, in the seventh round (201st overall).
