Ryan Suter is one of the St. Louis Blues' pending unrestricted free agents with July 1 rapidly approaching. With Suter being 40 years old and just completing his 20th NHL season, there naturally have been questions lingering about whether or not he will decide to retire.
Now, a new update on Suter's playing future has been revealed.
According to FanDuel Sports Network's Andy Strickland, Suter has not made a decision about whether he will play next season or not. In addition, Strickland added that Suter would consider playing a 21st season only if he finds the right fit for him and his family.
Suter could generate some interest this summer from teams, as he demonstrated this season that he can still be a serviceable bottom-pairing defenseman and penalty-kill option. In 82 games this season with the Blues, the 6-foot-1 defenseman posted two goals, 15 points, 109 blocks, and a plus-7 rating. His plethora of experience also adds to his appeal.
If Suter is open to having a lesser role with the Blues next season, he could make sense for them to bring back on a cheap deal if he decides to continue his career. However, with the Blues having younger options to consider, it is fair to wonder if they could go in a different direction, too.
No matter what happens with Suter this off-season, he has had himself a strong NHL career. In 1,526 career NHL games, he has recorded 107 goals, 589 assists, 696 points, and a plus-127 rating. He is also a three-time All-Star.
