Defenseman did not return following fight with Chicago's Cole Smith late in first period of 3-2 loss to Blackhawks
St. Louis Blues defenseman Logan Mailloux suffered an upper-body injury in the first period of a 3-2 preseason loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday.
Mailloux jumped in to defend partner Philip Broberg, who was clipped by Smith in what was called a tripping penalty with 6:18 remaining in the period.
Smith was assessed a tripping minor and fighting major, but Mailloux was called for instigating, fighting and a 10-minute misconduct but the Blues announced at the start of the second period that Mailloux had an upper-body injury and would not return, leaving the Blues with five D-men for the final two-plus periods.
What could it mean moving forward? Depending on the severity, or lack thereof, it would most certainly mean a call-up from Springfield of the American Hockey League should Mailloux miss any time, or it could have just been a precaution since this was the final preseason game.
If Mailloux would miss any time or get put on injured-reserve, could it mean the Blues call up Adam Jiricek and have him on the opening night roster? The deadline to set 23-man opening night rosters is Monday at 4 p.m. (CT).
The Blues have practice days scheduled for Sunday and Monday before heading to Austin, Texas for some team bonding ahead of their season-opener against the Dallas Stars on Friday.
