There will be no repeat for Canada at the IIHF World Championship.
The Canadians, who won the 2023 tournament, were upset by Switzerland, 3-2 in a shootout at Prague Arena in Prague, Czechia on Saturday.
St. Louis Blues goalie Jordan Binnington got the start for Canada but allowed two shootout goals on four attempts, including the eventual game-winner by Sven Andrighetto in the fourth round.
Binnington and the Canadians were down 2-0 in the first period when Canada, which topped the Swiss in group play 3-2 on May 19, was outshot 17-8.
But a goal by John Tavares (Toronto Maple Leafs) with 2:07 remaining in regulation enabled Canada to tie the game 2-2.
Canada was only 1-for-5 in the shootout but failed to score on the final four attempts after Connor Bedard (Chicago Blackhawks) have the Canadians a 1-0 lead after the first round.
Pierre Luc-Dubois (Los Angeles Kings), Damon Severson (Columbus Blue Jackets), Owen Power (Buffalo Sabres) and Dylan Cozens (Sabres) all failed to score on Switzerland goalie Leonardo Genoni.
Binnington stopped 28 shots and Blues defenseman Colton Parayko tied Tavares with a team-leading six shots on goal while playing 22:45.
So what was expected to be the gold medal game against Sweden, turns out to be the bronze game at 8:20 a.m. (CT) on Sunday. Host Czechia, which upset previously unbeaten Sweden 7-3 in the other semifinal on Saturday, plays Switzerland for gold at 1:20 p.m.
