ST. LOUIS -- Mathieu Joseph has displayed the tenacity, speed and physical nature that the St. Louis Blues have claimed they wanted more of heading into the 2024-25 season.
Despite a 4-1 loss against the Minnesota Wild in the home opener on Tuesday, Joseph was one the standouts for the Blues, including scoring the lone St. Louis goal in the game.
He probably deserved more ice time than he got, but Joseph made plays happen and even helped the Blues earn one of their two power plays in the game when he drew a tripping minor on Frederick Gaudreau at 7:35 of the second period.
I liked Joseph's speed and ability to get in on pucks quickly in the game, and it was a quick snap wrister from the right dot that beat Filip Gustavsson for the lone Blues goal at 10:10 of the third period and made it a 3-1 game.
Joseph started the game with Brayden Schenn and Dylan Holloway on the third line, but with the Blues (2-2-0) chasing the game for the fourth straight time, lines got juggled and Joseph made the most of his ice time playing just 10:58; he did take a penalty himself, a slashing minor at 10:07 of the second but he was a plus-1 in the game with eight shot attempts, one hit and one blocked shot.
