Blues defenseman set franchise record with point in fifth straight game to begin his St. Louis career on Thursday, hasn't been in ice for goal against this season; playing with Faulk has made this a dynamic pair thus far
ST. LOUIS -- The beginning to his St. Louis Blues career couldn't have started ay better for Philip Broberg.
The defenseman, who signed a two-year offer sheet for $9.16 million ($4.58 million average annual value that the Edmonton Oilers did not match, has been fantastic to begin his Blues career.
He set a franchise record for points in five straight games to begin his Blues career when he assisted on the Jake Neighbours overtime game-winner against the New York Islanders in a 1-0 win Thursday, and more impressive, he has not been on the ice for a goal against this season, playing alongside Justin Faulk.
"You can focus on that part or you can focus on his overall game, which I think is really impressive," Blues coach Drew Bannister said of the points production. "The size, the skating, outstanding stick. Making very quiet plays that don't really have a lot to do with the game itself but very smart plays that you kind of pick up on on the bench a little bit. Physicality, the ability to move pucks and get up in the play and be involved in the offense. For a player that size, he's done an outstanding job and continues to get better each game."
The Broberg-Faulk pairing continues to complement one another and continues to grow, and Broberg seems to be rubbing off on the healthy and veteran Faulk, and vice versa.
"I think they're a pair that complements each other," Bannister said. "They both have the ability to get up the rush, they both move the puck very well, they both can play heavy, they can separate down low, which I've seen from both of them very well, the physicality part, being able to kill plays down low and along the walls and then grab the puck and we can get going north with it with our forwards. Certainly that pairing has played very well and and they seem to complement each other very well."
Broberg comes into the game with a big test tonight and has one goal, four assists on the season and is a plus-4 averaging 19:21 ice time.
