Mikhail Sergachev found out he was traded by the Lightning in a funny way.
The Tampa Bay Lightning shocked the hockey world last month, trading star defenseman Mikhail Sergachev to Utah in exchange for J.J. Moser, Conor Geekie, a 2025 second-round pick, and a 2024 seventh-round pick.
It is fair to say that not many people expected that Sergachev would be traded, especially when noting he is under contract until the end of the 2030-31 season. Even Sergachev himself did not expect it.
While speaking to reporters, Sergachev told a humorous story about how he found out he was traded.
Here's what the star defender said on the matter: "I wasn't expecting to be traded. I was actually carrying out trash from my apartment, and I got a call."
This is certainly an interesting way for an NHL player to find out they have been traded. Understandably, Sergachev was not expecting it, as he was viewed as a long-term part of the Lightning's core. However, he will now instead be just that for Utah. When looking at Utah's current roster, he is their clear No. 1 defenseman and will be a significant part of their group as they look to become a playoff club.
