Before the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline passed, the Tampa Bay Lightning acquired Matt Dumba from the Arizona Coyotes. With the Lightning needing more defensive depth, this move made sense. However, now that the Lightning have just over $5 million of cap space and need to re-sign Steven Stamkos, it is likely that Dumba won't be re-signed by the Lightning.
When noting that Dumba is a hard-nosed right-shot defenseman with plenty of experience, there should be a good amount of interest in him this offseason. One specific team who should be watched is the Ottawa Senators.
Leading up the deadline, the Senators were one of the clubs who were connected to Dumba. When noting that they still could use some serious help on the right side of their defense, they could kick tires on the 2012 first-round pick again.
If the Senators signed Dumba, he would be a nice addition to either their second pairing or bottom pairing. In addition, he would quickly become one of their penalty-killing defenseman because of his shutdown style of play.
With the Senators needing to upgrade the right of their defense and recently being interested in Dumba, it would not be surprising if they were among his suitors in free agency.
In 76 games this season split between the Coyotes and Lightning, Dumba had four goals, 12 points, 108 blocks, and 202 hits.
