We have been given some big news about Steven Stamkos.

Victor Hedman speaks with media following 7-0 shutout win against the Flyers

Now that the Tampa Bay Lightning's season is officially over, Steven Stamkos is now the main player to focus on. The superstar center has an expiring contract and can hit the free-agent market this July if he does not get a new deal by then.

Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois made it abundantly clear that he did not plan to have contract discussions with Stamkos during the season. This naturally has led to speculation over Stamkos' future in Tampa.

Yet, now that the campaign is over, BriseBois has provided a massive update regarding Stamkos. He told reporters that contract talks between Stamkos and the Lightning have begun. BriseBois also noted that the talks began on Monday night after the club landed and that he's spoken to No. 91's agent.

BriseBois was also asked about the chances of Stamkos getting a new deal from the Lightning, and he responded by saying, "I'm very hopeful."

This is very encouraging news regarding Stamkos. While BriseBois stayed quiet about the idea of bringing Stamkos back during the year, it's clear that he wants his captain to stay in Tampa.

Stamkos, 34, had an excellent season with the Lightning, posting 40 goals and 81 points in 79 games. He also had five goals and an assist in five games. Clearly, he's still a big-time star in this league, and getting him signed is a necessity.
