Lightning Reassign Dominic James to Syracuse Crunch

After a successful rookie season, Lightning forward Dominic James is expected to be an important part of the organization moving forward.

The 24-year-old suffered a hand injury before training camp that delayed his start to the season by a few weeks. With James needing more consistent playing time, the Lightning felt sending him to Syracuse was the best option for his development.

“There's a lot of things that factor, but primarily it is to get James more reps,” said Jon Cooper. “He is a big part of our future, but he needs to get back to playing. Playing on a regular basis, not being in and out of the lineup. That's why we have the system we have is so that can happen. So hopefully he can progress down there so we can get him back up here soon."

James played his first two games of the season in Syracuse to get back into game action before joining the Lightning as their fourth line center. He’s one of just two forwards on Tampa Bay’s roster who can be reassigned to the AHL without having to clear waivers.

James’ assignment comes as center Yanni Gourde nears a return. Gourde underwent hip surgery in June and was initially expected to return in December. His recovery is trending ahead of schedule.

“I'm feeling better. Probably every day, trending in the right direction,” said Gourde. “There's still some work to be done, but it's definitely trending.”

The Lightning host the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday at Benchmark International Arena, before heading out on a four-game road trip that starts Saturday against Minnesota.

“He’s not playing tomorrow, but is there a chance on the road? Potentially,” Cooper said.

Victor Hedman, Anthony Cirelli & Jake Guentzel all had body maintenance days on Wednesday but are expected to be in the lineup on Thursday.
