Zemgus Girgensons has been one of the most successful Latvian players in NHL history, that seems safe to say at this point. On Saturday night, he passed a major milestone that had previously only been achieved by two Latvian-born players and not a single one of them was a forward like Girgensons.
When looking at the history of Latvians in the NHL, two defensemen Sandis Ozolins (875 games) and Karlis Skrastins (832 games) have been able to achieve the most longevity in the world's top hockey league. They were the only two from their nation to pass the 800-game mark for over a decade, until they were joined by Lightning forward Zemgus Girgensons.
In his first 800 games in the NHL, Girgensons has split time with just two teams, spending the majority of his career with the Buffalo Sabres before joining the Tampa Bay Lightning for the 2024-25 season. He has scored 96 career goals and has tallied a total of 201 points in his career up to this point.
Considering Girgensons will turn 32 in just over a week's time, it seems possible that if he continues to show value at the NHL level, he could become the first Latvian-born player to reach the 1,000-game milestone.
