The Lightning should consider signing this forward to a PTO.
With NHL training camps getting closer, teams around the NHL are starting to sign players to professional tryout (PTO) agreements.
The Tampa Bay Lightning have not added anyone on a PTO yet, but it is fair to wonder if that could change. It would not hurt for them to create more competition at their training camp.
When looking at the free agents left, one player who could make sense for Tampa Bay to take a chance on with a PTO is forward Gustav Nyquist.
Nyquist remains a free agent after he had a tough 2025-26 season with the Winnipeg Jets. In 51 games with the Central Division club, he posted one goal and 12 points. This was after he had 11 goals and 28 points in 79 games split between the Nashville Predators and Minnesota Wild during the 2024-25 season.
Yet, Nyquist's past success is what would make him an interesting player to watch on a PTO for the Lightning. Just back during the 2023-24 season, he scored 23 goals and set career highs with 52 assists and 75 points. He has also recorded at least 40 points in nine out of his 14 NHL seasons, so he could have the potential to give Tampa Bay a bit more secondary offensive production if he earned a contract for the season.
Overall, with the Lightning having spots to fight for in their lineup, there would be no harm in them taking a chance on a bounce-back candidate like Nyquist.
