Could the Lightning part ways with one of their core players?

Could the Lightning part ways with one of their core players?

The Tampa Bay Lightning have some big decisions to make this offseason. Steven Stamkos is due for his next contract, while Victor Hedman is also eligible for a contract extension. However, if the Lightning want to keep Stamkos around and lock up Hedman early, they will need to clear out cap space.

Because of this, in a recent article for the Tampa Bay Times, Eduardo A. Encina said that forward Anthony Cirelli is a "player to watch" in trade talks this offseason. Encina also noted that Lightning GM Julien BriseBois said, "Nothing is off the table" to sign Stamkos and Hedman.

Cirelli, 26, carries a $6.25 million cap hit for seven more seasons. While he is locked up long-term, he also has zero trade protection, meaning the Lightning could move him without any restrictions.

However, as Encina argued, trading Cirelli would certainly come with some big-time risks. Cirelli is a massive part of the Lightning's roster, as he is in their top six and is their top defensive forward. Thus, trading him would certainly sting. However, at the same time, the Lightning need money, and clearing out his $6.25 million would give them just that.

We will need to watch what happens with Cirelli this offseason. If the Bolts make him available, he will garner a lot of attention. He's an elite penalty killer in his prime and would be a long-term addition to a club, which adds to his value.
