Nikita Kucherov Opens Up About Trade Request, Lack of Communication

On Friday night, news broke that Nikita Kucherov had requested a trade from the only NHL team he’s ever known. Three days later, Kucherov shed light on what led to his decision.

For Kucherov, it was never about the money. Instead, it came down to a lack of communication.

“It was never about the money for me,” Kucherov said. “More about poor communication and respect. Over the last four months, we only have had two conversations and Julien, in the end, made it clear that I’m free to walk on July 1.”

Kucherov’s public trade request could push general manager Julien BriseBois into a more open conversation about his future in Tampa Bay. The 33-year-old is the reigning Hart Trophy winner, a three-time Art Ross Trophy recipient, two-time Ted Lindsay Award winner and two-time Stanley Cup champion.

When asked Monday whether he sees a situation where he remains with the Lightning beyond this season, Kucherov said, “You know, I made my request, and … yeah.”

Kucherov was also asked what the Lightning organization means to him.

“Everything,” he said. “I got drafted here, played for, now this is my 14th year. A couple championships, met a lot of great people. You know, everything. My kids grew up here, and I’m forever grateful to this organization.”

The situation is reminiscent of Steven Stamkos’ departure for Nashville three summers ago. After spending 16 seasons with the Lightning, Stamkos was eligible to sign an extension, but conversations never really progressed, eventually leading him to leave Tampa Bay in free agency. It's a decision the fanbase still hasn't full moved on from.

Kucherov felt it was important his teammates knew about his trade directly from him before it became public.

“For now, I’m part of this team, and I’ll do anything to help my teammates win,” he said. “These guys are my family, and this will never change.”
