The Maple Leafs enforcer spoke on what it's been like to be on a team with Auston Matthews and witnessing him make history on Saturday.
Ryan Reaves knew Auston Matthews was a great goal scorer well before he signed a three-year, $4.05 million contract to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs last summer, but seeing it up close has given him the player a new appreciation for Arizona native.
"I'm soaking it in. It's fun to watch. I've had better seats than anybody," Reaves said of Matthews. "I've never played with a guy that can score like that and put the puck where he can. It's been really fun to watch and I'm really proud of him for pulling it off. Let's see if he can get 70 now."
Matthews became the only active NHLer to reach the 60-goal milestone in a season on Saturday when he scored Toronto's final goal in a 3-0 win against the Buffalo Sabres. With nine games remaining on the schedule, Reaves isn't ruling out how high Matthews' goal total can reach.
"Eighty (goals) is possible for that guy," Reaves said. Anything is possible with him, the way he shoots the puck. Anything is possible. I look forward to watching."
If Matthews can reach the 70-goal mark, he'd become the first player in over 30 years to accomplish the feat. Teemu Selanne and Alex Mogilny were the last players to score 70 or more goals in a season. Both scored 76 in the 1992-93 season.
Matthews has 60 goals and 35 assists in 72 games this season. He scored 60 goals in 2021-22 in the same season he won the Hart Trophy awarded annually to the NHL's MVP. He became just the ninth player in NHL history to put up at least two 60-goal seasons.
