With Sergei Bobrovsky opening a new chapter in his legendary NHL career, he's got his new equipment for his stint with the Toronto Maple Leafs, explaining the story behind his new mask design.
After going through the first couple of days of the Toronto Maple Leafs' training camp without any design on his mask - just a blank, plain white mask - Sergei Bobrovsky's new design was completed in time for his first pre-season game with the team on Saturday.
Bobrovsky is one of the newest members of the Maple Leafs, acquired with a three-year, $ 7-million-per-year contract on July 1. And joining a new team, specifically for goaltenders, means new-looking equipment.
After Toronto's 4-1 loss in their opening pre-season game at home to the Montreal Canadiens, Bobrovsky explained the new design on his new True Hockey mask, created by DaveArt.
"It's simple," the veteran netminder said. "So I got the Leafs logo. I got the Archangel Michael. It's Sky Warrior. So just keep it simple. I'm orthodox, and I believe in God."
The Archangel Michael is known as the protector of mankind and defender of heaven, characterized by strength and courage as God's top angel.
With Michael placed on the right side of Bobrovsky's head, the other side has a giant Maple Leafs logo. And in the background of all the pictures and logos on top is a solid blue brick wall.
On the chin area of the mask, there is an upper-half piece of a white Maple Leaf.
In Bobrovsky's pre-season debut with his mask, he faced 10 shots, stopping 11 for a .909 save percentage and played just under half of the contest before Anthony Stolarz came in for him.
